Abstract

Diarrhea is a symptom rather  than a disease and represents the  manifestation of a wide range of  gastrointestinal disorders. It is  classically defined as a fecal output  exceeding 200 g/day in individuals  consuming a low-fiber (Western)  diet, although the term is more  commonly used to describe the  passage of loose or watery stools. Chronic diarrhea, which affects  up to 5% of the population at any  given time, is a common clinical  problem. Diarrhea that persists for  several weeks or months, whether  continuous or intermittent, warrants  a thorough clinical evaluation to  identify the underlying cause and  guide appropriate management.
