Synopsis

Mycology, the study of fungi responsible for fungal infections in  human and animals has ancient roots of history. Noteworthy names in the  advancement of mycology include Raymond Sabouraud, Gurby David,  Charles Emmons, Libero Ajjelo and many others. In India, some of mycologist  like Dr. L.N. Mohapatra (AIIMS), Dehli, from Dr. H.S. Randhawa, Dr. H.C.  Gugnani and Dr. Z.U.Khan, V.P. Chest Institute, Dehli, Dr. O.P. Srivastava,  CDRI, Lucknow Dr. Mahendra Pal (Anand), Dr. D.P. Monga (Hisar) and  others have contributed tremeduously in mycology. The priority of diseases  caused by viruses and bacteria and in particular epidemics have attracted  more attention of administrators and policy makers thus mycology has been  a neglected field. Traditionally, mycology has been a subject of Bacteriology  course curriculum. The other aspect which affects study of fungi is their  identification and treatment of fungal infections. Vaccine is also not available  for fungal mycoses. Now during COVID-19, the emergence of black fungus  (Mucromycosis) has brought the significance of fungi into lime light. The  limited number of mycology laboratories and cumbersome identification of  fungi pose reluctance in this field of mycology. A monograph on “Mycotic  infections in animals’-Rishendra Verma and P.K.R. Iyer in the year 1989 and  revised again in the year 2000 was published by ICAR-Indian Veterinary  Research Institute, Izatnagar. The literature supports that fungal infections  in human and animals continue to affect. Newer advancements employing  molecular techniques have been made in the mycology. It is, therefore,  timely to make a book available to researchers, clinicians and students both  in medical and veterinary science to provide updated information’s to help  then in understanding about fungi. The book provides excellent details of  superficial, cutaneous and systemic fungi associated with diseases of human  and animals, practical aspects like laboratory requirements, diagnosis,  identification, reagents, media, preservation of fungi and sampling. The book  embodies the molecular advancements made in the identification of fungi  employing whole genome sequence and PCR
