Author Guidelines

Author Guidelines

The Journal of Extension Systems (JES) is a half-yearly (June and December), double-blind peer-reviewed journal published by ACS Publisher under the aegis of the Extension Systems Foundation International. Please read these guidelines, the Aims and Scope and the Ethics and Malpractice Statement before submitting.

Article Types

  • Research Article – an empirical study reporting the authors’ own survey, field or experimental data on an extension system or its participants, with a stated methodology, sample and findings. This is the journal’s principal category.
  • Review Article – a synthesis of published literature on an extension theme, without new primary data.
  • Conceptual / Theoretical Paper – develops or critiques an extension concept, model, framework or theory by argument rather than by reporting collected data. It has no sample and no results section, and none is expected.
  • Field Experience / Case Study – a documented account of a specific extension programme, intervention or institutional experience and the practical lessons drawn from it.

Papers with no extension, adoption, communication or human-behaviour dimension – for example a pure crop, soil, horticulture or livestock trial, or a laboratory or clinical study – are outside the scope of the journal.

Manuscript Preparation

  • Language and format: English, as a Microsoft Word, OpenOffice or RTF file; single-spaced, 12-point font, italics rather than underlining (except in web addresses).
  • Order of the manuscript: title page, abstract, keywords, main text, acknowledgements, references.
  • Title page: title, the name and affiliation (with country) of every author, and the e-mail address of the corresponding author; ORCID iDs are welcome. The title page is kept separate from the anonymised manuscript (see Double-Blind Review).
  • Abstract and keywords: a single-paragraph abstract of up to 250 words, followed by four to six keywords.
  • Structure of an empirical paper: introduction; methodology (study area, sample size and sampling method, tools or instruments, and method of analysis); results and discussion; conclusion. A conceptual or theoretical paper is not expected to have a methodology or results section. Every manuscript must contain an Abstract, an Introduction, a Conclusion and References.
  • Tables and figures: place every table and figure within the text at the point where it is first discussed – not collected at the end or after the references. Number them consecutively (Table 1, Figure 1), give each a clear title, cite each one in the text, and state units. Tables must be editable tables, not pasted images; figures must be legible at the size they will be printed.

References

Use the APA 7th edition style. Cite in the text as (Author, Year) and list the references alphabetically by the surname of the first author. Entries take the form: Surname, I. I., & Surname, I. I. (Year). Article title in sentence case. Journal Name in Title Case, Volume(Issue), pages with an en-dash. Use “&” rather than “and” between author names. Give the DOI as a URL where one exists.

Double-Blind Review

Every manuscript is reviewed by experts who do not know the identity of the authors, and the authors are not told the identity of the reviewers. The manuscript file must therefore not identify the authors: remove author names, affiliations and acknowledgements from the file, and write self-citations in a form that does not reveal identity (for example “the author’s earlier study” rather than “our earlier study (Sharma, 2020)”). Put all identifying details on the separate title page.

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).

The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.

Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.

The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.

The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements set out in these Author Guidelines (Manuscript Preparation and References).

The manuscript file has been anonymised as described under Double-Blind Review above, with all identifying details placed on a separate title page.
