Ayurvedic Management of Acute Kidney Disease in Garbhavastha Janita Raktachaap – A Clinical Case Study

Acute Kidney Disease (AKD), though not explicitly described in Ayurveda, aligns closely with conditions involving Mutravaha Srotas Dushti, Vrikkarog, and certain stages of Mutrakricchra, Mutraghata, and Prameh. In Ayurvedic understanding, AKD represents Strotorodh (obstruction) and Strotodusti (vitiation) of urinary channels caused by Tridosha vitiation—Vata leading to degeneration, Pitta to inflammation, and Kapha to congestion. Impaired Agni results in Ama accumulation, obstructing renal function. A 23-year-old female diagnosed with AKD secondary to pregnancy-induced hypertension presented with generalised weakness and altered urinary patterns. Ayurvedic management included Tridosha Shamana, Srotoshodhan, and Rasayan therapies, supported by dietary and lifestyle modifications. Within one month, the patient showed marked improvement in energy, appetite, and urinary function, along with a significant reduction in serum creatinine. This case highlights the potential of Ayurvedic interventions in restoring renal function, preventing progression to CKD, and enhancing overall quality of life in AKD patients.
