The present study was conducted to evaluate the protective effects of 70% alcoholic extract of Artocarpus heterophyllus (jack fruit) seed on haematological and serum biochemical alterations in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic Wistar rats. Forty adult male rats were divided into five groups: normal control, vehicle control (0.5% carboxy methylcellulose), diabetic control (STZ @ 45 mg/kg b.wt. once i/p), diabetes induced-glibenclamide-treated (0.61 mg/kg b. wt.), and diabetes induced - A. heterophyllus seed extract-treated (500 mg/ kg b.wt. orally) groups. Diabetes was induced using STZ @ 45 mg/kg body weight intraperitoneally, and treatments were administered orally for 28 days. Diabetic rats exhibited classical clinical signs including polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia, lethargy, hyperglycemia, and significant body weight loss. Significant alterations in haematological parameters, total cholesterol, and triglyceride levels were also observed in the diabetic control group. Treatment with glibenclamide and hydroalcoholic A. heterophyllus seed extract significantly improved body weight, feed intake, blood glucose level, haematological indices, and lipid profile toward normal values. The beneficial effects of the plant extract may be attributed to its antihyperglycemic, antioxidant, hypolipidemic, and immunomodulatory properties associated with flavonoids, phenolic compounds, and dietary fiber. The findings suggest that Artocarpus heterophyllus seed extract possesses significant protective potential against diabetes-associated metabolic and haemato-biochemical alterations.
