Effect of Tinospora cordifolia on Haematological Parameters in Twin-Bearing Periparturient Surti Goats

The present study investigated on 12 clinically healthy pregnant Surti goats carrying twin foetuses which were randomly allocated into two groups (n=6 each): a control group (routine diet) and a supplemented group (diet supplemented with Tinospora cordifolia [Giloy] stem powder @ 6% of the total concentrate mixture for 30 days prepartum to 30 days postpartum). Blood samples were collected at days -30, -20, -10, -5 before kidding, on the day of kidding (0) and days +5, +10, +20, +30 after kidding to evaluate haematological parameters. Results indicated that erythrocytic parameters (TEC, Hb and PCV) followed physiological peri-parturient fluctuations with no significant differences between groups. However, Tinospora cordifolia supplementation significantly (p<0.05) improved leukocyte dynamics, evidenced by higher total leukocyte, neutrophil and lymphocyte counts and a significantly (p<0.05) lower neutrophil-to lymphocyte ratio around kidding, suggesting enhanced immune competence and reduced stress response. In conclusion, Tinospora cordifolia supplementation exerted beneficial immunomodulatory effects during the periparturient period, supporting its potential use as a natural phytogenic supplement to enhance physiological resilience in twin-bearing Surti goats.
