Population-Environment Interface: A Critical Review of Evolving Perspectives

The relationship between population and environment constitutes one of the most significant and enduring themes in geographical and environmental studies. Present paper critically examines the evolving nature of the population-environment interface by tracing the historical transformation of human-environment interactions and reviewing major theoretical perspectives that have shaped scholarly understanding of this relationship. The study highlights how human societies have progressed from a stage of dependence on nature to increasing control and exploitation of environmental resources, eventually moving toward the contemporary paradigm of sustainability. The paper further analyzes major schools of thought including the Ecological School, Neo-Classical Ecological School, Ultimate Resource Approach, Eco-development School, Eco-Societal Ecological School, Quality of Life School and Sustainable Development Perspective. These perspectives provide diverse explanations regarding the causes of environmental degradation, the role of population growth, technological innovation, resource utilization, social equity and environmental sustainability. The review of these perspectives reveals that environmental problems cannot be attributed solely to population growth; rather, they result from a complex interaction among demographic processes, consumption patterns, technological development, economic structures and governance systems. The study emphasizes that contemporary environmental challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, resource depletion, pollution and ecological imbalance require an integrated approach that balances economic development, social justice and environmental conservation. It concludes that the sustainable development paradigm offers the most comprehensive framework for managing the population-environment relationship by promoting responsible resource use, ecological stewardship and intergenerational equity. The paper highlights the need for policies that harmonize population dynamics with environmental sustainability to ensure long-term human well-being and ecological resilience.
