Abstract

The objective of this review has been to examine fecal characteristics in dairy cattle. The approach to observing fecal matter is non-invasive and relies on the shapes of freshly dropped dairy cow feces. Fecal patterns, consistency, fecal pH, etc., are markers of cow health, but in this study, our focus is on whether fecal patterns could play an important role in the indexing of fecal scores. The fecal index score for these different shapes can be derived by combining these factors, particularly based on their appearance or patterns. Scoring feces has not been a comfortable process for dairy farmers because the variations are very subtle. This paper critically examines studies in which several authors have proposed performing this task with or without the assistance of deep convolutional neural networks.
