Abstract

Agriculture must simultaneously adapt to a changing climate and reduce its own greenhouse gas footprint. This review synthesizes recent peer-reviewed literature on how farming systems are adapting to climate change through agronomic practices, water management, digital and precision technologies, and climate-smart agriculture (CSA) frameworks, alongside the policy and institutional structures needed to support them. Evidence across regions shows that combined adaptation-mitigation approaches can raise yields by up to 38%, cut greenhouse gas emissions by 20–40%, and increase soil carbon by 0.3–0.8 t C ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹, though adoption remains uneven and constrained by financial, institutional, and technological barriers, particularly in low-income regions. The review closes with regional case studies and a discussion of policy gaps.
